The Xcocolché

 The Xcocolché

It was night in the mayab, when the xkokolche knocked on the door of a very rich house; That day he had flown from one place to another to ask for work, but no one wanted to give it to him, one of the chief servants went out to answer his call, and seeing the opaque plumage and the xkokolche’s sac-zo, was about to tell him to leave, when he remembered that he needed a servant for the tasks that no one could do, so he hired her.

From then on, the xkokolche worked in hiding in the kitchen, because she was told that if one day the owner’s daughter was with her, she would be taken for ugly. This daughter was the chacdzidzib, or cardinal, a very pampered bird, who was so proud of her beautiful red plumage and the forebow that adorned her forehead, that she believed herself worthy of all attention.

The xkokolche lived sad and lonely, because no one came to talk to her. So time passed, until one day, the chacdzidzib had a whim: it occurred to her to learn to sing. Immediately, his parents hired the bird clarin, who was the best singing teacher.

The clarin began to give his classes; She would come in the afternoon and spend hours trying to get her student to learn to sing, but it was useless. The chacdzidzib was a very lazy student, bored with practice and was distracted in class and although the clarin did not know it, he had another student dedicated and studious: the xkokolche, that hidden in the kitchen, each class was attentive to the explanations of the master.

Soon the Xcocolche learnt to sing even better than the clarin, in the other hand the chacdzidzib had a horrendous singing and voice. The master was already tired of teaching such a bad student, so he renounced to the class.

The chacdzidzib did not care at all, because she got distracted with another whim, but for the Xcocolche tried to replace the class with songs that she invented each night. No one knew where did that singing came from so they just listened to it in silence.

The cenzontle was fascinated, he already looked for the beautiful bird with a beautiful voice, until a night that he received an invitation for dinner from the chacdzidzib. In the middle of the meal he heard that familiar voice, as soon as he heard it he ran to look for it in each bedroom hoping that he would find the singer then he went into the kitchen and there it was the Xcocolche singing as usual, the cenzontle did not want to interrupt her and left the room silently, but returned to the place each night to listen to her singing and noticed the loneliness upon the Xcocolche, so early in the morning went into the kitchen and kidnapped her. The next day he introduced her to the other animals as the bird with the wonderful singing; they received her with a cozy hug and the Xcocolche sang even better than before, since that day her singing makes every single bird feel gloomy and happy at the same time, that is why all the animals admire her singing
